CHAPTER EIGHT

Violet

Violet ran a comb through her dark hair, her eyes blank and morose. She didn’t see the lush green hills through her bedroom window. She was focused on the bleak uncertainty of her future, the nightmare that was now only days away. Violet’s house had been so depressing since she had been selected that part of her wanted to escape, just for the relief of not feeling stifled by sadness.

News of Violet’s shocking selection had traveled fast across the moors, and neighbors from all over the region were reaching out to Violet’s family. People had sent letters, notes of encouragement and sympathy, as well as gifts. Violet never wanted to look at any of it. If she did so, then somehow she would have to truly accept that she was being forced to live with a tribe.

The most gut wrenching of reactions had been Bryan’s. He had heard the horrifying news the day after Violet’s selection and run from his family’s house in a rage, stealing a horse and racing all the way to Violet’s. He’d reached her house in record time and jumped off the horse, yelling for Violet to come out. Violet’s heart had broken when she heard his voice. She had very slowly descended the stairs and made her way to the front yard. There Bryan had stood, his hair wild and messy from the wind, his clothes dirty and disheveled. His eyes were round and disbelieving, as if he needed to hear it from Violet herself before he could truly believe it.

Violet’s dreams had already been crushed, and she couldn’t bear to do the same to Bryan’s. Instead, she gazed at the ground, unable to look him in the eyes. That way she didn’t see his face crumble, didn’t see his eyes well with tears. She only heard him shout “No!” before he beat the ground with his fists.

Violet had walked slowly to him, taking his hand and helping him up. Without a word, she had held his hand and squeezed it before kissing him softly on the cheek. “Find someone else to love you,” she had whispered, “The only thing worse than me being chosen, would be for you to live alone and unhappy. Let only one life be ruined here, not two.” Too stunned to speak, Bryan had watched her turn away and walk back to the house. Violet waited until she had shut the door before she sank to the ground and sobbed quietly. After a long time, she heard his horse gallop off in the direction of his house.

Violet had not heard from Bryan since then, and she hadn’t spoken his name. Her family had been very careful not to mention Bryan or his family. And so the weeks had passed, everyone avoiding the approaching Mating Ritual, yet letting the sadness seep into every crevice of their daily living. Violet knew her parents were not handling her selection well, and she hoped that they could move past their anger and guilt once she was gone.
